Er widmet seitdem sein Leben dem aussterbenden Beruf des SƤumers – "sƤumen" bedeutet so viel wie packen, ein Lastentier bepacken. DafĆ¼r eignen sich besonders Mulis, eine Kreuzung aus Pferd und Esel. Streng genommen sind es zwei verschiedene Kreuzungen: das Maultier – eine Kreuzung aus Eselhengst und Pferdestute – und der Maulesel – eine Kreuzung aus Pferdehengst und Eselstute. Egal ob Maulesel oder Maultier, die robusten Huftiere existieren nur, weil der Mensch sie miteinander gekreuzt hat. Und ohne Zutun des Menschen wĆ¼rden sie auch nicht weiter existieren: Als Hybriden sind sie in aller Regel nicht fortpflanzungsfƤhig. Und so arbeitet Luciano nicht nur mit den Mulis, er zĆ¼chtet sie auch.
Seinen Lebensunterhalt bestreitet Luciano ausschlieĆlich mit seinen Mulis; der Sommer zƤhlt zur Hauptsaison. Mal werden die trittsicheren Tiere zum Abgrasen von Wiesen engagiert oder er unternimmt mit Katty als SƤumer Transporte ins Gebirge. Wie jetzt, wo HĆ¼ttenwirt Paolo seine SchutzhĆ¼tte in rund 2.350 Meter Hƶhe fĆ¼r die kommenden drei Monate erƶffnen muss. Doch das Wetter ist unberechenbar, und der geplante Lebensmitteltransport mit dem Helikopter zur HĆ¼tte droht auszufallen. Zur Erƶffnung der HĆ¼tte soll Luciano nicht nur mit Muli Katty Lebensmittel zur HĆ¼tte transportieren, sondern er will auch seine beste SchĆ¼lerin Elisa auf den beschwerlichen Weg mitnehmen. hunter gatherers is nasty british and short versus a sort of noble savage idea SALONS isn't really offering a noble savage idea but he is offering a kind of positive reevaluation of the potentialities of hunter-gatherer existence right but then regardless of which of these perspectives you take on this phase of humanity living in small bands and so on um the story goes you know at some point there's a discovery of agriculture and in this more positive evaluation of hunter-gatherer life which you find for example in a yuval harare sapiens right and he's i think drawing on SALONS you know he represents the discovery of agriculture as the as a luxury trap right where basically your your capacity to produce agricultural surpluses does not equate to and in fact equates ultimately to a lower standard of living for most people because it first of all increases the population but therefore requires more work to feed the growing population and also makes you more vulnerable to things like drought um or other kinds of whites that and and and also that it brings people living together in you know more crowded urban settings than therefore you know brings about various kinds of diseases and the original sort of plagues and things like that which would have been much much less likely in when humans were living in smaller bands at least so the story goes you know from there humans have sort of already fallen i
have you know either undertaken this inevitable step forward towards greater progress and material abundance if you take one version of the story or have fallen from grace into this luxury trap from which they can never escape right and that's that's essentially the version you find in harare sapiens so basically their you know their central contention is that we have to scrap both of these accounts which which even though they seem to be opposed actually have the same implications which which are these kind of deterministic assumptions about human history

and 16:05 it seems to me the best i can understand is that once you got this insight from SALONS 16:11 which allows you to reevaluate and say maybe this whole agricultural revolution 16:16 was a mistake right that's sort of an idea that has gotten out into intellectual circles that maybe this was 16:23 all a trap that i think set the stage then for james c scott and against the 16:29 grain where he tries to put some daylight and some separation between the innovation of 16:37 agriculture and then the rise of all these horrible things of war and authoritarianism and 16:43 he argues that no there were thousands of years where people farmed in different ways and experimented with it 16:49 i think he maybe even uses this word play which like shows up constantly in 16:55 dawn of everything like it's like one of their main buzzwords but scott sort of wants to separate those things out and 17:01 say no you can practice agriculture and get certain benefits from it and it doesn't necessarily 17:08 lead to the rise of authoritarian societies and all this you know all this misery right is the implication 17:14 but it makes it possible because once you're growing grain you can stockpile 17:21 it you know you have to harvest it at one time of year you stockpile it in huge greeneries and then you know 17:27 basically some glorified marauder is going to come and demand a share of it 17:32 and and the state the state arises as a kind of glorified protection racket or 17:38 he he even says even worse they're just like they're just bandits who just want to entrap people and exploit them and 17:44 and hence then you get these big awful states and empires and 17:50 graber and wengrow it seems are trying to even then push a step beyond 17:55 james c scott and say no you can even have a big urban society and even then 18:02 it can work along egalitarian lines they do use that word a few times and it can 18:08 work in consensual by consensual cooperative governance you can have you 18:14 know they talk about oh these cities in sumer had neighborhood committees and 18:19 you know there was no sort of ruling uh tyrant and they sort of cast you know it's 18:26 almost utopian right it's borderline utopian but they're kind of casting some of these early urban agricultural 18:32 societies as kind of like little anarcho-syndicalist cooperatives right and and they're 18:39 trying to tell us see we can have those nice things even at the same time that we have cities and art and literature 18:47 and all these things we like we can do it in this more kind of cooperative consensual non-authoritarian way yeah 18:54 and i think you know it often seems like what they're presenting is this kind of combinatory matrix where you sort of 19:00 have all these different elements of a society right and that what they're what they're trying to claim is that you 19:07 can sort of combine and recombine them and and sort of unbundle them in different kinds of 19:13 ways right so you know whereas this this previous model assumes that there's kind 19:18 of a lockstep adoption of certain social forms as you 19:23 know say the economic mode of production shifts and they you know heavily critique the notion that there even is a 19:29 mode of production right that the mode of production is a is a useful framework and by the way you know this you know 19:35 again part of why i thought of you in relation to this was like it does remind me a little bit of what you do in your 19:41 podcast and these myths of the month where you'll take some kind of organizing concepts and try to kind of 19:47 unpack it and show how it you know may conceal a much messier reality and might might sort of reify something that is 19:54 that is actually far more ambiguous --------------------
-------------------- i think it is in in a The Critique of Scarcity 34:20 way his sort of dismissal of the the premises behind a sort of anarcho-primitivist 34:26 notion as well as his you know embrace at least in his other writings of sort of high-tech society right that he 34:32 really um he thinks that there was a sort of positive modernist dream of the future that that was betrayed right and 34:39 that he he has an interesting reading of neoliberalism and postmodernism as kind 34:45 of both symptomatic of and also ideologically partly responsible for 34:50 this betrayal because what they do is say i mean they shift the terrain of progress away from the notions of a sort 34:59 of widely distributed abundance that technology technology could produce 35:04 towards other other ideas of what sort of growth and progress would be that's an interesting essay and he doesn't 35:10 really revisit these ideas here but you know i guess one thing that's kind of interesting is that i'm i'm currently 35:15 writing something about yvonne ilitch right who's often categorized as an anarchist and 35:22 has this whole kind of interesting critique of scarcity of sort of the notion of scarcity as a 35:27 an organizing concept of modern societies right and it's it's very concurrent in a way with that SALONS 35:33 article because ilitch's argument is sort of that the sort of ideologies of modernity begin by 35:40 positing scarcity right as then something that has to be compensated for by 35:46 the constant development of technology as well as the developments of all of these sort of institutions and 35:51 professions right that that essentially um take autonomy away from individuals 35:57 and families and communities on the premise that this is what is going to bring progress and abundance to them you 36:04 know so so illiterate's critique is that this whole notion that there even is such a thing as scarcity right is this 36:11 this kind of dangerous ideological assumption that that sort of undergirds 36:16 you know much of uh modernity and so you know it's interesting in a way to see graber you 36:22 know not taking that critique and so far as i think he does basically embrace a notion that 36:28 you know technologically generated abundance is a is a desirable and positive project
